And They Say Whining and Complaining Doesn’t Help

Posted on January 19, 2020January 19, 2020 by elfworld

Domino V11 launch

On Friday HCL announced what languages will be supported with V11. And it seems that certain Nordic languages are on the table after all! Read all about it here!

After the NCUG conference in Stockholm last year, I posted this blog posting where I complained about the fact that HCL had stated during our conference that Notes V11 would not be delivered in Norwegian, Danish, Finnish or Icelandic. I also started a vote for it on the Domino idea’s web page, where its current status says “needs review.”

But Friday evening I got several messages from friends in the HCL community that said “You’re gonna love this!” These messages included a link to a posting on the HCL Digital Solutions blog where it’s stated that Notes V11 will come in a Norwegian version!

The posting states that V10 has yet to receive the second wave of languages, but that they are just around the corner. These languages are:

  • Arabic
  • Czech
  • Dutch
  • Polish
  • Russian
  • Swedish

So there will be no Norwegian, Finnish, Danish or Icelandic versions of V10. A Norwegian and Danish version was actually originally promised, but I can live with it, since I see no point in installing  V10 for my customers when V11 is out anyway.

When V11 shipped on December 20th last year, the first wave of languages was included (English, German and Japanese), with the promise of more languages just around the corner. On Friday the following languages were announced for the first quarter of 2020:

  • Brazilian Portuguese
  • French
  • Italian
  • Korean
  • Spanish
  • Simplified Chinese
  • Traditional Chinese

So what about Nordic languages? Here’s what’s stated in the blog posting:

HCL will be providing an update at the end of Q1 with the details of our plan for wave two languages and what additional new languages are going to be added to v11. For example, those not previously available for v10 such as Hebrew, Catalan and Norwegian.

The quote does state “such as,” which means that there will most likely be even more languages included in the wave that will come after Q1. I will be very surprised if more Nordic languages aren’t included the in the final list.

But so far it seems that at least Norway can celebrate. I’m going to be careful taking credit for getting a Norwegian version, but I did whine and complain a lot. And I’ve been in contact with a lot of people at HCL about it, both in person at conferences and via online meetings, emails and chats. If my efforts did help, I’m gonna start whining and complaining even more, since it worked so well!

(PS! Verse on Premise, Verse on mobile and Sametime are already supporting 30+ languages)
